Between bounding along coastal fringes near and far during the golden hours, I’ve often wandered the Merewether stretch of sand in search of both solitude and opportunity.
Testing and trialing for many years, I ended up avoiding the area all together as sunrise and sunset approached.
Delivering any true justice to this coastline which meant so much to my early photographic journey just seemed near impossible.
On a recent winters morning after large swell battered the area, the sand had finally shifted.
Exposed to the elements during high tide was this phenomenal multi-tiered rock shelf.
After almost 8 years of searching, I’d never once seen this entire section be anything but sand.
Textures, patterns and unique compositions were splashed throughout the environment as each wave crashed over me.
Freezing feet, and the suction pulling rocks of all sizes back out to sea could never stop me from utilising this chance to finally capture a remarkable display of this area.
Visiting again soon after I was eager to show a friend the condition of the coastline, only to find the entire shelf once again covered by sand, with no evidence of ever existing.
A fleeting pocket of perfectly aligning elements - quickly vanishing without a trace both you and I will forever share.
As a landscape photographer, nothing is more rewarding than these kinds of moments.
